The growth of new capacities based on renewable energy sources (RES) in 2022 in the world will again become a record, according to the report of the International Energy Agency (IEA), the publication "Kommersant".
“Renewable energy will break another world record in 2022, despite the obstacles associated with high costs and problems in supply chains,” the agency writes.
According to the IEA, in 2021, the global increase in new capacities based on renewable energy amounted to 295 gigawatts, which was a record figure. “It is expected that this year the global capacity increase will amount to 320 gigawatts, which is equivalent to the volume that is close to meeting the total electricity demand in Germany, or corresponds to the total electricity production in the European Union from natural gas,” the report says.
According to the agency, new renewable energy-based capacities commissioned in 2022 and 2023 will help reduce the EU's dependence on Russian gas. However, this contribution will also depend on energy efficiency measures aimed at curbing energy demand in the region.
At the same time, the IEA notes that the current increase in new capacity would be even faster if it were not for problems with supply chains. In particular, the cost of installing solar panels and building wind farms in 2022 and 2023 will remain higher than before the pandemic.
“While energy markets face a wide range of uncertainties, the increased attention of governments to energy security and accessibility, especially in Europe, gives a new impetus to efforts to accelerate the implementation of energy efficiency solutions and renewable energy technologies,” the agency also writes.
